For more than 30 years, generous homeowners in Portland’s historic Irvington neighborhood have opened their doors to visitors during the annual Irvington Home Tour. Many of the homes are magnificent examples of early 1900s architecture and design – which have since been polished, preserved and adapted for modern living.

Introducing Jim Heuer, Photographer

Since acquiring a Yashica twin-lens reflex camera as a young boy, Jim’s photographic work has concentrated on architecture and railroading, two closely related fields. His railroad photography, spanning some 50 years, has appeared in Trains Magazine, Passenger Train Journal, Passenger Train Annual, and numerous books and other specialized publications. As an early adopter of digital photography, he has exhibited his digital photography-based images in galleries in Portland, including Brian Marki Gallery, Studio 2507, and others. In the last 20 years, his other passion, historic preservation, his led him deeper into architectural photography in support of his research into early Portland residential architecture. This interest has given him the opportunity to photograph some of the most notable historic homes in all areas of Portland, including most of the homes open for the Irvington Home Tour each year since 2001. His architectural photography has appeared in both national publications like American Bungalow and area publications like The Oregonian and Portland Tribune. Jim continues to hone his skills as an architectural photographer, most recently in a workshop conducted by internationally renowned architectural photographer Tim Griffiths.
