Volunteering for the Irvington Home Tour

Participating in the Home Tour as a volunteer provides opportunities to meet your neighbors and contribute directly to an important neighborhood effort... and it's fun.  Home Guides get a free ticket to take the Tour during the hours they are not on duty -- a great way to see the Tour, save money AND have fun!

Altogether upwards of 140 volunteers are needed to support the Tour operations.  The main jobs are described below:

  • Home Guides - This is the largest category of volunteers, with upwards of 100 people serving in this capacity.  Each volunteer is assigned to one of the homes on the tour for one 3 hour shift.  During the remaining 3 hours of the Tour, the volunteers may use their free passes to take the tour themselves.  The Home Guide receives a briefing on the outstanding features of the home and is assigned a location in the home or on the grounds where they greet guests and answer questions.  If necessary, they remind guests of the Tour rules.  The assignments of the Home Guides are coordinated by the Home Hosts.

  • Home Hosts - Those who have served as In-home Guides in prior years can qualify to serve as Home Hosts.  The Home Hosts are responsible for Tour-day coordination with the home-owners, for assigning Home Guides at appropriate locations throughout the home and for general satisfaction of the Tour guests at the site.  An important job for the Home Hosts is planning the traffic flow through the home to insure maximum comfort and safety of Tour guests.  Since Home Hosts are usually too busy to take the Tour on Tour-day, they are invited to attend the private home-owners' Tour and dinner party the night before Tour-day.

  • Other positions - Individual volunteers may be assigned to numerous other posts including: ticket taking, hauling and posting signs, distributing materials and supplies, etc.

The Irvington Community Association also maintains a website to provide services internal to the Irvington Community.  We invite all Irvington neighbors and others interested in NE Portland community affairs to visit that site as well.
